Why History Buffs Love Zebulon

This community actually has a rich history, dating back to at least 1906 when the Raleigh and Pamlico Sound Railroad Company decided to bring a railroad through the area, which was, at the time, the Whitley and Horton family farms.

Through that development, the town of Zebulon was officially recognized on Feb. 16, 1907.

The community was named after Zebulon Baird Vance, the Governor of North Carolina during the American Civil War.

The community would continue to grow when it annexed the neighboring community of Wakefield in 1997. This increased the area inside its corporate limits from 2,115 to 3,908 acres.

Today, there are three properties in this community that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Those are: Wakelon School, Bennett Bunn Plantation, and the George and Neva Barbee House.
