Clayton Area Guide for Wake County Residents

Located in Johnston County and often referred to as a satellite town of Raleigh, Clayton is an inviting town of just 16,000 people as of the 2010 Census.

This community, which has seen a lot of growth thanks to its proximity to the Research Triangle and access to major highways, is a great place to settle down and raise a family!

Why Historian Love Clayton

This town is overflowing with history from across the centuries.

For instance, this community was actually built on a road cut that was blazed by Governor Tryon’s troops around 1770 as they marched North from New Bern to Hillsborough.

Then, 100 years later, the railroad came through the area, giving this community its first name: Staillings’ Station. The community was named such because the depot for the North Carolina Railroad was in the home of Mrs. Sarah Stallings.

Yet three years later, the town’s name was changed to Clayton. It was officially incorporated in 1869.

The town enjoyed a prominent place in the history books during the Civil War, Great Depression and beyond.

But the area really started to grow when the industrial and residential boom started taking shape in the 1970s.

At that time, Clayton’s workforce adapted, switching over to a more service/trades-oriented economy and helping the town grow.

Today, this community boasts several places that are listed n the National Register of Historic Places, including The Clayton Banking Company Building, Clayton Graded School and Clayton Grammar School-Municipal Auditorium, Clayton Historic District, Cleveland School, Ellington-Ellis Farm, Walter R. and Eliza Smith Moore House, Sanders-Hairr House, and Stallings-Carpenter House.
