Why History Buffs Love Fuquay Varina

First of all, there are decades of history right within its name.

This community formed as a result of a merge between Fuquay Springs and Varina in 1963.

Fuquay Springs was founded by Frenchman William Fuquay, who was attracted to the area because of a spring that was discovered running through the area.

His family was convinced that the water flowing through the springs had healing properties. This belief helped fuel tourism in the area.

Concurrently, J. D. “Squire” Ballentine (a Civil War veteran) returned to an area nearby and fell in love with a woman who signed her letters “Varina.”

The two would fall in love and in her honor, he ended up naming a new post office in the area “Varina” when he became its first postmaster.

Decades later, these two bordering communities would combine, forming modern day Fuquay-Varina.
